Watter: sustainably transforming disinfection through water
Watter, based in Drenthe, is transforming water disinfection in the food, chemical, and agricultural industries with a sustainable system that eliminates hazardous chemicals and reduces CO2 emissions.
Make it in the North asked Watter’s marketing manager Sjaak Hummel about what makes their company unique, what the business climate in Drenthe is like, and what international job seekers can do to boost their chances of finding a job.
What does Watter do?
Watter provides a proven more sustainable and effective alternative, particularly for water disinfection in the food, chemical and agricultural industries. By allowing companies with the Watter system to produce their own effective disinfectant on site (in situ) from just water, salt and electricity, we make regular pre-packaged deliveries of hazardous disinfection chemicals unnecessary. This means that one not only significantly reduces their CO2 emissions, but also creates safer working conditions.
There are now hundreds of machines in 9 countries.
What is the business climate in Drenthe like?
Drenthe is known for its tranquillity, spaciousness, and nature — not necessarily for its entrepreneurial climate. However, there are plenty of opportunities for businesses to establish themselves and grow here. The province and municipalities offer various programs to support business growth and provide a platform for success.
Does being in Drenthe come with any disadvantages for companies there?
Drenthe is relatively sparsely populated, meaning there are relatively few people for the specialist positions.
Does Watter hire employees who don’t speak Dutch yet?
Yes, we do. We’ve had people from Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and the UK, for example. But with our ambitions to expand, especially into Germany, we would like to hire at least one native German-speaking colleague in the short term. Onboarding isn’t very different from that of Dutch colleagues, as most of our digital infrastructure is already in English. Since our core business requires specific knowledge, we have an intensive training program for everyone. All of our colleagues speak good English.
What challenges have you seen so far in terms of training people who don’t speak fluent Dutch yet?
We don’t have many challenges because all of us speak English. But if necessary we’re happy to provide the necessary training.
What is your advice for companies in Drenthe who want to hire international employees?
Be prepared. Communication is crucial when hiring new employees, so make sure that you have most of the digital infrastructure in at least English.
What is your advice for people who aren’t Dutch (and don’t speak Dutch) for living and working in Drenthe? What is the best way they can find a job?
Work on your network. Not only online, but also offline. Visit events, make friends, join a sports team. That way you can create your own opportunities and ask for recommendations and help if needed.
What are companies looking for?
I can’t speak for other companies, but at Watter, we look for people with a positive and curious attitude, who demonstrate integrity and take ownership. If you have those qualities — and preferably some skills relevant to the job — we’re happy to train and teach you the rest.
